Places to See
Achill Cliff House is located in Keel, in the heart of Achill Island. This means we offer easy access for visitors to explore all areas of the island.
Slievemore Mountain
Directly to the north of Keel, and dominating the skyline, is the mountain of Slievemore. This 672m peak mountain contains many ancient features on its slopes, including megalithic tombs and the famous deserted village of Slievemore.
Keel Beach
In front of Slievemore is Keel Lake, a large, shallow freshwater lake that drains into the sea at Keel beach (Trawmore strand). As well as offering good freshwater fishing, Keel Lake is perfect for windsurfing and kayaking. Trawmore strand, a 3km long golden strand, connects Keel village in the west to Dookinella in the east. This Blue Flag beach is popular with surfers.
Minaun Cliffs
At the Dookinella end of Trawmore Strand, stand the magnificent Minaun Cliffs. These cliffs, which stand over the Atlantic waters of Keel, form the spectacular view that can be seen from the restaurant of Achill Cliff House. On the far side of Minaun, to the south-east, sits the beautiful village of Dooega and Achill’s famous Atlantic Drive. This road, which hugs the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, leads from Dooega back to Achill Sound, the village by the bridge that connects Achill Island to the County Mayo mainland.
Croaghaun Mountain
To the west of Keel, beyond the villages of Pollagh and Dooagh, stands Croaghaun. This mountain has a peak at 668m and, on its remote northern side, contains what are claimed to be the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Its eastern elevation includes a corrie lake, Corrymore, which supplies water to the villages in this part of Achill.
Keem Bay
To the west of Croaghaun lies Keem Bay, a magnificent horseshoe bay containing a Blue Flag beach. Beyond Keem Bay, travelling west, the next parish is New York.
